A little idealist in all of us

There are a lot of people out there who are hopeless romantics and idealists. Think about it. Every time you turn on the radio you can be assured that you are going to hear twenty different songs about lost loves or found loves or hoping for love on and on and on.

What would the world be like if we didn't have people like this? People who dared to dream, to write, to sing, to paint, to create, to build castles in the sky without worrying about everything coming crashing through the clouds back to earth. As my best friend said when I asked her why I had to be an idealist, "Because without dreamers and people like you the world would be boring."

There would be no poetry, no music, no movies, no books, oh...and no technology. Take that realists! Sorry, I don't mean to take a jab at you realists...but....what would the world be like if people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had decided to challenge the status quo and do the seemingly impossible?

Think about the music you listen to. Why do you like it? I cannot imagine it is because the bass line is just so stellar. No, it is because you relate to the message of the song in some way. Because it speaks to you. We idealists like to believe that there is meaning in almost everything. That everything happens for a reason and that you can go against logic and reason if you hope deep enough and for long enough.

Hope. That tiny thing that idealists hold on to. We find it in everything. In songs, in pictures, in feelings. As for me, I feel like hope is the strongest when you just feel like something is right. Like you know that something is clicking. Some part of the lyrics of that song makes sense to you. Some small detail in that painting speaks to you. Some part of you wishes that you were in that photograph.

So maybe there is a little idealist in all of us. A little part of us wants to go against what is most likely going to happen and wants to hope for what we think could never happen. Part of us wants a fairytale romance. A knight in shining armor to come save us. A guy to come chasing after us because he realized that he can't live without us. A girl who, when she kisses you or looks at you, makes you believe in magic.

Impossible dreams. Silly realties. Castles in the clouds. As fleeting and ridiculous as dancing on a beach in your best clothes with no shoes.
