Spoiler: Gatsby Dies

There is one thing that everyone seems to forget about The Great Gatsby, at the end, Gatsby dies and Daisy just goes on living her life. Like nothing happened. Like the man she professed to love for the last five years didn't exist or mean anything to her.

Hope always seems to die. Just like Gatsby, the ideals and things that people stand for and believe in always seem to get beaten out of them by the harsh realities of life. Everyone is an idealist until the cards are down and life starts to get hard. They get scared, because holding on to hope is hard and it hurts a hell of a lot.

Daisy and Gatsby spent five years apart. He made himself a social giant, hoping that one day Daisy would realize that it was all for her.

He had hope.

He embodied hope. He had this grand vision for his life and when it was just within reach, he grabbed for it. And Daisy seemed to share his grand vision. But when the cards were down and everything was real and within reach, Daisy ran. Because she was scared. And it was easier than hoping for the grand life she wanted.

But Gatsby...

Gatsby never lost hope. He even died hoping. Hoping that is was Daisy on the other end of that phone call. But he never knew. Never knew that she was too much of a coward to call him. To run away with him. To love him.

So what is the point of all of this? I'll tell you.

Can you even imagine what the world would be like without lovers, dreamers, people who foolishly hold onto hope until it nearly kills them...people like Gatsby? It would be boring. Can you even conceive a world with love and hope? Now, I am not advocating for hope with out some thought, not blind hope, but hope nonetheless.

So dream, love, and above all, hope. Do not let the world harden your heart and mind because people are constantly telling you that idealism and romance are dead. I am here telling you that they are not. And yes, it is going to hurt. Holding on to hope is going to hurt a lot. Some days you are going to want to give up and become a realist. But I am begging you, hold on to hope. Because without it, our world will never know extraordinary love and passion.

So hold out for the green light. Reach for it. Covet it. Because in the end, you may just be able to grab for it.
